Data Science Summit 2019

The Data Science Summit, the largest data science event in Central and Eastern Europe, was held in Warsaw for the third time in 2019. This year, Data Traction was among the Data Science Summit speakers. On the main stage, we presented alongside well-known companies such as Accenture, PwC, Microsoft, Nvidia, Oracle and Samsung and talked about our area of expertise Privacy in the Age of Machine Learning.

The intersection of artificial intelligence and data protection we regularly face in our work. Our talk was focused on data scientists and developers of machine learning systems, to introduce them to design concepts for privacy-friendly AI systems. In addition to human prejudice, that is unintentionally passed on to machine-learning systems and thereby preserved (see our article on the AMS algorithm), we have addressed consent regarding data processing activities in the context of AI systems and shown why retraining of an AI system may be necessary in the case of a revocation of a consent. In addition, we addressed the issue of human intervention. We discussed whether this should be considered a universally applicable and adequate means of correcting AI errors and how the development of understandable AI systems (XAI) could replace human intervention while strengthen the human trust in AI systems.

In total, nearly 90 talks were presented in 11 parallel tracks at the Data Science Summit. Topics ranged from Computer Vision and Natural Language Processing, through Blockchain Analysis to Market Research. We enjoyed presenting at the Data Science Summit 2019 as well as leading many interesting discussions about the topics AI and data protection. Thanks to the excellent organization and the great location, the Data Science Summit 2019 was an all-around successful event.
